Head of Research Group for Knowledge Engineering / Lecturer in Computational Life Sciences

As one of Switzerland's largest multidisciplinary universities of applied sciences, the Zurich University of Applied Sciences ZHAW has over 11,500 students and 3,000 faculty and staff.

The School of Life Sciences and Facility Management is located in an attractive setting in Wädenswil, which is situated on the Lake of Zurich. It is here that research and learning is carried out in the areas of Environment, Food Science, Health and Society. The Institute of Applied Simulation (IAS) has a team of around 40 employees in the following specialisations: Bio-Inspired Modeling & Learning Systems, Biomedical Simulation, Computa-tional Genomics, Predictive Analytics, Simulation & Optimization and Knowledge Engineering. The IAS is responsible for providing a solid grounding in MINT (Maths, IT, Natural Sciences and Technology) and for a wide range of courses in the areas of Computational Science (CS) at both BSc and MSc level.

From 1 January 2017 (or by arrangement) we are looking to recruit a

Main responsibilities include:

  • Academic lead of the High Performance Computing (HPC) Centre, Wädenswil

Design, planning, budgeting and implementation of the HPC infrastructure.

  • Member of the institute management
    Management of both staff and financial aspects in the Research Group for Knowledge Engineering.
  • Acquisition and leading of research projects
    Responsibility for budgeting aspects, leading of the team and implementation of research projects in the field of Computational Sciences.
  • Lecturer in Computational Life Sciences 20 %
    Leading and development of teaching units at MSc and BSc level in the area of Database und Data Architecture Systems. Supervision of student work (MSc and BSc theses in Applied Computational Life Science & Facility Management).

  • This challenging position requires a university degree in Information Technology or in a related area; a PhD is preferred. Applicants should have a high level of understanding and good knowledge of the IT infrastructure in the field of HPC, as well as familiarity with operating systems, system management, software for automation, cloud technologies, architecture, and technology for data backup. In addition, applicants should have a number of years' experience in the application of Big Data analysis methods. One of the challenges of this position is also project leadership, for which applicants should have proven experience in the implementation and acquisition of R&D projects. The successful applicant must be able to work at a highly independent level and will complement our project team through his/her willingness to approach interdisciplinary issues. One of the prerequisites for this job is that the applicant is willing to work in an interdisciplinary team and has the ability to acquire third-party funded research projects.
