Data Engineer

Your tasks 

This position represents an exciting opportunity to be embedded in the entrepreneurial environment of elipsLife. We are seeking a candidate in Zurich with passion for technology to join our highly skilled team. You will work with colleagues across different locations (Zurich, Dublin, London) who contribute to developing analytics services and solutions. You will support elipsLife's Medical Insurance team and other business departments by building, running, and continuously improving a data platform used for generating insights and creating data driven products from structured and unstructured data for business and strategic initiatives. The technological basis for your solutions is the strategic Palantir Foundry platform. In your responsibility you will be supported by various Swiss Re and elipsLife technical expert teams. The role also involves strong collaboration with business functions, colleagues and peers, as well as third party vendors.

The core tasks are: 

  • Use your data engineering skills to design well-thought-out data models supporting self-service data driven analytics solutions to business users and data scientists
  • Integrate data from various sources to feed  these data models
  • Implement business logic, checks and other processes bringing data into the right format and quality
  • Develop, manage, optimize, verify, and test code used for data processing
  • Automate and speed up data loads, data quality checks, tests and other processes so that business users get quick access to data at high quality
  • Take primary ownership for running, stabilizing, and extending a platform to improve/change how pricing and product design in medical insurance are performed
  • Professionalize operations of the platform and make it both efficient to run and effective to use
  • Work collaboratively and contribute strongly within agile project teams of product owners, requirements analysts, actuaries, architects and other fellow data engineers/data scientists
  • Build sustainable relationships with key business and IT stakeholders to become a trusted partner
  • Integrate external data sources onto the platform to understand the dynamics and influence of the external environment on portfolio performance
  • Identify opportunities for improvement to existing processes, prioritize and implement agreed actions (e.g. implement data ontology, improve data pipeline, automate processes, migrate business applications off Microsoft Excel and onto the platform)

Your profile

  • University degree (or similar) in Computer Science, Data Science, Math, Statistics or Engineering
  • Excellent verbal and written English skills are required
  • Fluency in German is preferred
  • 2+ years of professional experience in data integration / data management / data modelling
  • In-depth skills on various technologies needed for data engineering
  • Familiarity with data structures, algorithms, storage systems, cloud infrastructure
  • Proficient with programming/scripting languages such as Python/PySpark, R, Java, SQL or similar
  • Knowledge of distributed computing frameworks/Spark
  • Experience in building scalable data pipelines/data engineering

The following would be a plus:

  • Knowledge/experience in the Insurance or Reinsurance domains
  • Knowledge about frontend development frameworks
  • Knowledge of Palantir Foundry platform
  • Experience in agile project management
