To further strengthen our “HW & Mechanical Engineering” department, we are currently looking for an “Optical Engineer”.

The Position

As “Optical Engineer”, you will be in charge of leading optical engineering activities on various projects, involving various optical detection solutions applicable to harsh environments. The measurement chains thus developed will have to integrate: one or several detection elements, based on Fabry-Perot interferometry and/or Fiber Bragg-Grating, the transmission of the optical signal to conditioning units and the processing of the conditioned signals.

You will also be the technical lead for the launch of new optical sensing systems, from concept to engineering to production. The development of these new systems will include modelling, optoelectronic and optomechanical design, simulation, testing and coding.

Finally, you will be responsible for the selection, characterization and testing of optical components, including configuration and laboratory measurements.

The main responsibilities for this role are:

Development activities:

  • Support the Design of the mechanical assembly/sub-assembly and ensure that it fully covers the initial expressed needs through specification
  • Generate files aimed at producing the developed assembly/sub-assembly or drive the relevant colleague for generating these files (e.g. BOM, drawings, programming files …)
  • Develop or support the development of any test tooling that are required to prove that the designed assembly/sub-assembly is aligned with its specification
  • Handles or drive the validation tests aimed at proving that the designed assembly/sub-assembly is aligned with its specification
  • Support the qualification tests for certification purpose
  • Generates all development artefacts of the designed assembly/sub-assembly expected along the development cycle.
  • Support the production transition of the designed assembly/sub-assembly

Characterization activities: (optical focus)

  • Responsible for optical component selection, characterization and testing techniques
  • Responsible for laboratory optical systems set up and measurements
  • Bring new optical sensing systems through maturation from concept to development to engineering and production
  • Modelling, simulation and coding (such as MATLAB Simulink)
  • Design and test complete, stable, and reliable high-temperature optical sensing systems for static and/or dynamic pressure sensing systems (initially), taking into account low noise sensing techniques.

Support & Training activities: (Optical focus)

  • Technical reference in specialty optical fibers, optical components, optical coatings, and micro-optic components (collimators, micro-lens, mirrors, anti-reflection coating, etc.)
  • Technical reference in interferometry sensing and related processing techniques as well as in low noise detection techniques
  • Internal reference regarding laser safety, handling of optical components, and optical fiber, etc.
  • Responsible for internal training on optical sensing.

Your Profile

  • Master or PhD Degree in Physics, Mechanical and/or Electrical Engineering, with specialization in optical sensing
  • 5 years of experience in optical sensing systems and sensor applications. Hands-on laboratory background experience is required.
  • Strong knowledge in interferometry sensing and related processing techniques as well as in low noise detection techniques.
  • Knowledge in Optical systems certification for aerospace
  • Fluent in English, good command of French (spoken and written)
  • Basic knowledge in CAD and CFD/FEA simulations tools, as well as Zemax opticStudio.
  • Experience in signal processing and condition monitoring
  • Capacity in training technical teams and lead introduction of new technologies
  • Capacity in leading, planning and executing development and testing of sensors incl. hardware and software debugging
  • Good listening, communication, presentation and coaching skills
