The University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Lucerne is the leading educational and research institution in central Switzerland. It offers Bachelor and Master degrees and pursues research and development projects. In a total of six departments, the University of Applied Sciences and Arts, occupies 1'600 employees and educates 10'500 students.
The Institute of Medical Engineering is one of nine institutes of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Lucerne - Department Technology and Architecture. Its main activity is focused on research and education. The research of the institute is specialized in conducting bio-medical and biotechnological research in the context of space medicine or mechanobiological dysfunction on Earth. Experiments carried out under simulated or actual microgravity as well as under terrestrial conditions address important questions concerning biological mechanisms of mechano-transduction.
The Institute of Medical Engineering maintains the Biotechnology Space Support Center (BIOTESC) as part of the ESA User Support and Operations Center (USOC). Task of the center include providing the necessary infrastructure and support to scientists conducting biological experiments in the European space laboratory "COLUMBUS". Furthermore, the BIOTESC center is responsible for the implementation of the operational products as well as for the support of astronauts while executing the associated biological experiments onboard the ISS from our integrated Control Room.
